Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website and off-site presence so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cite your business in their answers. Traditional SEO wins a ranked link; GEO wins a mention inside the answer itself.
GEO in plain English
When a buyer asks an AI assistant “who should I hire for X,” the assistant composes an answer from sources it trusts and can parse. GEO is the work of becoming one of those sources. It has an on-site half and an off-site half, and the off-site half usually matters more.
How GEO differs from SEO
| Traditional SEO | GEO / AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Win condition | A position on a page of links | A citation inside a generated answer |
| Unit of content | Keyword-targeted page | Extractable answer block, FAQ pair, comparison table |
| Technical layer | Crawlability, speed, links | All of that, plus JSON-LD schema, llms.txt, AI-crawler access |
| Off-site signal | Backlinks | Brand mentions, reviews, and inclusion in third-party roundups |
| Measurement | Rankings and clicks | Citation frequency across AI engines, AI-referred inquiries |
They are not rivals. AI engines read pages that classic SEO made crawlable and clear. Budget them as one integrated program.
What GEO work actually includes
On-site: answer-first page structure, FAQPage and Organization schema, consistent entity facts (name, founder, location, services), max-snippet directives, and an llms.txt file. Off-site: review volume on the platforms roundup writers cite, directory and roundup inclusion, and named authors with real credentials. On-site alone is the cheap half; a provider selling schema-only “GEO” is doing a fraction of the job.
Why it matters now
Buyers increasingly start vendor research inside AI assistants rather than a search results page. Businesses that are absent from those answers are not losing a ranking; they were never in the conversation. Early movers also compound: once engines repeatedly cite a source for a category, displacing it costs more than the original work did.
Where Archer fits
Archer Web Strategies builds GEO programs for small and mid-size businesses: the audit, the page architecture, the schema, the content, and the off-site review and citation plan. It is implementation, not a report. Founder Gene Bohensky has consulted for small businesses since 2011 and pairs the technical work with the sales process that converts the inquiries GEO produces.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as AEO?
In practice, yes. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) overlap almost completely, and most providers deliver both as one discipline. Some use AEO for answer boxes and voice, GEO for chat assistants; the deliverables are the same.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO layers on top of SEO. AI engines read the same crawlable, well-structured pages that SEO produces. Dropping SEO to fund GEO usually weakens both.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Citation changes typically become visible over roughly 60 to 90 days, with compounding effects over 6 to 12 months as authority builds. Anyone promising overnight AI citations is overselling.
Can I do GEO myself?
The on-site basics, yes: clear answers, FAQ structure, schema via a plugin. The harder parts are the off-site citation building and knowing which prompts your buyers actually use. Self-serve AI-visibility tools run roughly $29 to $489 per month but only measure; someone still has to do the work.
