How to Get Your Business to Show Up in ChatGPT Answers

To appear in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers: publish answer-formatted pages for the questions buyers actually ask, implement JSON-LD schema, keep your business facts identical everywhere online, allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, and build third-party mentions and reviews. Off-site authority usually outweighs on-site polish.

The five factors, in order of impact

1. Third-party authority

AI engines lean on sources they already trust: review platforms, industry roundups, directories, and publications. If “best X in Y” roundups exist for your category, inclusion in them is gated by review volume and rating. Check the threshold, then run a review program until you clear it. This single factor outweighs everything you do on your own site.

2. Answer-formatted content

Write pages that open with a direct answer under 60 words, use question-form headings, and put comparisons in tables. Engines extract; they do not read introductions. A page that buries its answer forfeits the citation to one that does not.

3. Entity clarity

Your name, founder, address, category, and services must be identical on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and directories. Inconsistency makes engines unsure who you are, and unsure entities do not get recommended.

4. Structured data

JSON-LD schema (Organization, FAQPage, Article with a named author, Service) lets engines parse your facts precisely instead of inferring them. Add max-snippet:-1 so engines may quote full passages, and an llms.txt file summarizing the site.

5. Crawler access

Confirm robots.txt does not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended. Some security plugins and CDNs block them by default. This is a five-minute check that silently zeroes out everything else when it fails.

A realistic timeline

Crawler access and schema: week one. Answer-formatted pages: weeks two through eight. Review volume and third-party mentions: months one through six. Citation changes typically become measurable in 60–90 days and compound afterward. Archer runs this as a program: audit first, then the build, then the off-site work, with citation tracking throughout.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check whether ChatGPT already cites my business?

Ask the engines the questions your buyers would ask, in fresh sessions, several ways: “best [category] in [area]”, “[your name] reviews”, “alternatives to [competitor]”. Note who gets named and which sources are cited. That list of cited sources is your target list.

Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content?

It keeps your pages out of AI answers, which for most local and B2B service businesses means invisibility where buyers increasingly look. Blocking is a real choice for publishers who sell content; for service businesses it is usually self-harm.

Do I need new pages, or can I fix existing ones?

Both work. Restructuring existing pages (answer blocks, FAQ sections, schema) is the fastest win. New pages are needed where you have no page answering a question buyers ask, which is most comparison, cost, and alternatives queries.
